How to Play Mahjong Solitaire

Mahjong Solitaire is a relaxing puzzle game where you match pairs of tiles to clear the board. It’s easy to learn and perfect for a quick mental workout!

The Goal

Your goal is simple: remove all the tiles from the board by matching them in pairs. When all tiles are gone, you win!

Understanding the Tiles

The game uses 144 beautifully decorated tiles. Each tile has a symbol or picture on it. Most tiles appear four times in the game, giving you two possible pairs to match.

Tile Types

  • Bamboo Tiles: Numbered 1-9, decorated with bamboo sticks
  • Circle Tiles: Numbered 1-9, showing colorful circles
  • Character Tiles: Numbered 1-9, displaying Chinese characters
  • Wind Tiles: East, South, West, and North
  • Dragon Tiles: Red, Green, and White dragons
  • Flower & Season Tiles: Special tiles that can match with any other flower or season tile

How to Match Tiles

Matching tiles is easy! Just tap two tiles with the same picture to remove them from the board. But there’s one important rule…

The “Free Tile” Rule

You can only select tiles that are “free” — meaning they have at least one side (left or right) open with no tile blocking it, AND no tile stacked on top of them.

A tile IS free if:

  • Its left OR right side has no tile next to it
  • No tile is stacked on top of it

A tile is NOT free if:

  • Tiles are blocking both sides (left AND right)
  • Another tile is covering any part of it

Step-by-Step: How to Play

  1. Look at the board — Scan for tiles that are free (nothing blocking left or right, nothing on top)
  2. Find a matching pair — Look for two free tiles with the same picture
  3. Tap the first tile — It will become highlighted to show it’s selected
  4. Tap the matching tile — Both tiles will disappear from the board
  5. Keep matching — Continue finding and matching pairs
  6. Clear the board — Win by removing all 144 tiles!

Don’t worry if you get stuck! The game includes helpful features to keep you playing:

  • 💡 Hint Button: Shows you a matching pair if you can’t find one
  • 🔀 Shuffle: Rearranges the remaining tiles when no matches are available
  • ↩️ Undo: Takes back your last move if you change your mind

Tips for Success

  • Start from the top: Removing tiles from higher layers opens up more options below
  • Think ahead: Before matching, look at what tiles will become free after you remove a pair
  • Watch for triples: If you see three matching free tiles, choose the pair that unlocks the most new tiles
  • Clear long rows: Removing tiles from long horizontal rows gives you more open sides
  • Take your time: There’s no rush! Relax and enjoy the puzzle

Special Matching Rule

Most tiles must match exactly — a Bamboo 3 only matches another Bamboo 3. However, Flower and Season tiles are special: any Flower can match with any other Flower, and any Season can match with any other Season. This is because each of these tiles appears only once!
